Understanding your coverage options while caring for patients across the country

As a physical, occupational, or speech therapist, you spend your days helping others feel their best—so having reliable health insurance of your own matters. When you’re working travel jobs though, navigating coverage can feel a little more complicated. Between short-term contracts, changing locations, and agency transitions, it’s important to understand how your health insurance fits into your travel lifestyle. The good news? Most travel therapy agencies offer health insurance as part of their benefits package. Still, it’s worth taking the time to explore all your options so you can choose what works best for you. From private plans to agency-provided coverage, here’s what traveling therapists should know about health insurance on the road.

Health Insurance Options for Travelers

Private Health Insurance

Some traveling therapists choose private health insurance, especially if they plan to work with multiple agencies or want more control over their coverage. While private plans can sometimes come with higher monthly premiums, they often offer flexibility and customization that fits a traveler’s unique needs. According to Blue Cross Blue Shield, there are three common types of private health insurance plans travel therapists may consider:
  1. PPO: This health insurance plan gives you an entire network of preferred health care providers, and depending on your individual plan, can cover a significant portion of your bills.
  2. POS: Point of Service combines a PPO and HMO, you receive a referral from a PCP, but the out-of-network providers are more accessible.
  3. HMO: A Health Maintenance Organization allows you to pick a Primary Care Physician (PCP) whose referral you'll need to receive care within the network.

Agency Health Benefits

Many travel therapists choose to enroll in health insurance through their staffing agency. This can be a convenient and cost-effective option, especially if you plan to stay with one agency long term. Like any insurance plan, though, it’s important to understand the details before enrolling. When reviewing an agency’s health insurance benefits, consider asking yourself these questions:

  • How long is the waiting period before coverage begins? Some plans don’t start immediately, which could leave a gap early in your assignment.
  • What services are covered—and what isn’t?
  • Does coverage continue if you stay with the agency long term?
  • How long does coverage last between assignments?
  • Can you add a spouse or dependents, and what does that cost?

Asking the right questions upfront helps ensure there are no surprises later.
